We all want to feel confident in our skin but sometimes, gaining a high confidence level requires the right knowledge and it’s application. Just like our lives and daily experiences we learn to be perfected. Skin care plays a major role in our confidence level and it’s always a goal to glow. If you have major skin concerns like hyperpigmentation, in this blog episode we have explained a descriptive way to treating hyperpigmentation.
What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is like the medical words used to describe darker patches of the skin due to excess melanin production. Now, we have types of hyperpigmentation. We have Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, which is usually called dark spots. And now this happens as the result of your healed acne.Â
Maybe when you had acne, you used to pop your acne. Or sometimes you might really not pop the acne, but then it might result to dark spot, which is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
So if you have acne, please do not pop it. Okay?
Now we have another type, which is Melasma. Melasma is sometimes called the mask of pregnancy. Melasma is a condition where darker patches appear on your forehead, on your cheek, your chin, your nose. Just name it. And this happens due to hormonal changes when you’re pregnant or overexposed to sun. I know people of color majorly don’t like using sunscreen because they’re like, “I’m dark skinned, so I really don’t need sunscreen. My melanin is protecting my skin.” No, you need sunscreen regardless of your skin tone. Yes, we, the people of color, need sunscreen the most.
Using sunscreen regularly can prevent a lot of skin concerns that we are currently treating. If you had used sunscreen initially, I’m sure that 50% of all we’re trying to target right now will not be in place if we used sunscreen. So please always use sunscreen.Â
We have another type of hyperpigmentation, which is called Age Spots. It can also be called liver spots. They are tiny, dark or black spots that appears on the face, on the hands, or on any part that is exposed to the sun.
And this usually happens to older adults or people that expose their skin to sun without protection, without the use of sunscreen. So it all boils down to using sunscreen. When you use your sunscreen religiously, you have fewer chances of hyperpigmentation, especially melasma.
Now, if you’re trying to treat any of these hyperpigmentation, you really want to seek professional advice, so you’re sure that you’re treating it the right way.
You know some of us we are very funny. We’ll be like, “oh, I have vitamin C, I have black soap, I have scrub.” And you think that’s ok, this is going to work for your hyperpigmentation? No, no, no. YOU NEED A PROPER ROUTINE! Yes, you actually need a proper routine to treat your hyperpigmentation, and especially when you have melasma.
You really need a proper routine to treat your melasma and manage it so it does not reoccur, because melasma has a tendency to reoccur.
So in all of it, try and see a specialist. If you are looking to seek a specialist you are in the right place! click here the book appointment button to get on consultation with me. Or if you already have your skin specialist, perfect. But you need a skin specialist to give you a routine to guide you.
It actually depends on the grade of the hyperpigmentation you have. You might need a chemical peel. But if it’s not that much, a proper routine can actually handle that.
